Zadar City Gates

As a family, you’ll come to find that there’s nothing quite like visiting Zadar, Croatia. It is literally one of our favorite cities in the world!
From its stunning views and vibrant culture to its wonderful attractions and activities, visitors to this Croatian gem are sure to have a fun-filled and unforgettable vacation. Located on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia in the beautiful Adriatic Sea, Zadar has been a showcase of natural beauty and vibrant culture for centuries.
This city is full of quaint alleyways and marinas, and the old town of Zadar perfectly frames the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic. Sights and sounds from the past remain alive here, from the Roman walls to the domey churches and wide-open square, Škarpina. Just sightseeing in Zadar alone is enough to keep your family entertained for days!
Zadar is home to some incredibly beautiful architecture, such as St. Donat Church and the Bell Tower. Another must-visit destination when in town is the Skywalk Copacabana, which consists of an observation deck that lets guests get up close and personal with stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the city’s unique skyline.
There’s also the Zadar Archaeological Museum. This is such a great stop for history buffs. The museum showcases a vast selection of archaeological artifacts, from the earliest settlements of the Croatian people to rare jewelry and pottery from the Roman era.
Or maybe, you want to walk among the pieces of Roman ruins that are scattered around the city. We were awed by being surrounded by so much hands on history! To put this in perspective, you could literally walk right up to all these ancient Roman piece and touch them, feel the texture and really see the carvings. So, awesome!
The sounds of Zadar are just as enchanting as its sights. You’ll be amazed by the traditional tunes of the accompanists playing their tambura, a local stringed instrument, in the city’s squares. Or if you prefer something a little more relaxing, stroll along the lively promenades and feel the peaceful rhythm of the gentle Mediterranean Sea.
However, if you’re looking for a truly unique and amazing experience, the Sea Organ is a must-see/ must hear. It is not only an artwork, but also a musical instrument composed of 35 organ pipes located underwater. This spectacular installation by Nikola Bašić overlooks the harbor and creates music when the waves push air through its pipes.
We loved sitting on the promenade watching the clouds and the sky and relaxing just listening to the eerie, yet beautiful sounds of the sea organ and the waves crashed against the walls. In fact, our kids loved it so much, it is the reason why we stayed an extra day! Unfortunately, that extra day cost a tooth! More about that later!
For the best sunset experience, and to take a break from the hustle and bustle, head to “Greeting to the Sun”- a truly cool experience that combines art, technology, and nature. The “Greeting of the Sun” is innovative and captivating. It is a series of 300 multi-colored solar panels that produce light and sound shows when activated by the sun's rays. During the day, this picturesque work of art turns Zadar's seafront into a rainbow light show. At night, the illuminated glass panels create an enchanting atmosphere with its melodic melodies and shining lights. And, it is in this very beautiful and totally awesome spot, that we had an accident!
Kids love to run and cartwheel and explore the circle of lights. But, as our girl Eleigh was cartwheeling upon the solar panels, living her best life, our youngest Ryder came running like a crazy man and “BOOOOM!” Eleigh cracked her tooth among the lights. Oof! (All, I can say was thank goodness for Safety Wing. We were able to affordably and quickly get it fixed.)
But it did not stop our absolute LOVE of Zadar!
There is so much more to explore in Zadar. Culture lovers can get their fill of local music, traditional dances, and seafood at night markets which are the perfect place to rub elbows with the friendly locals. Sports fans will have no shortage of ways to spend the day either, with miles of coastal beaches, caves, and trails to explore, as well as plenty of water sports activities in the bay.
And that’s not all! There’s plenty to do in and around Zadar – get a taste of history with a visit to the beautiful Cathedral of St. Anastasius, or pick up fresh produce from local farm stands in the morning. You can even take a day trip to the nearby national park of Paklenica, home of towering cliffs, waterfalls and deep ravines. Whatever your preference – a relaxing beach vacation, sightseeing, shopping, or even adventure – Zadar has it all.
